The fastest way to choose is to ask for the full edition name on a friend’s title screen. “Minecraft on PC” does not settle it because different editions can exist on the same platform. If you already know the group or world you want to join, matching that environment is more useful than trying to declare one edition universally better.

Use that as your starting point, then verify the device, current version, and any server requirements with the person hosting. Separate playing from modifying
Think about the kind of activity you want: building alone, exploring with a small group, joining a specific community, or experimenting with custom content. For custom content, check the exact edition and version required by its creator. The word “mod” on a download page does not tell you whether it will work with your copy.
Keep a simple note of your edition, version, and where the content came from. That is useful when a world behaves differently after an update. Before adding third-party content to a world you care about, use the game’s supported backup or export process and verify that you know how to restore it.
Keep the first world deliberately small
A first session is a poor time to solve every technical possibility. Make a test world, learn the basic controls, and decide whether you prefer open building or a progression-based survival experience. You can explore other settings later. Starting with a clear goal makes it easier to notice which part of the game you actually enjoy.
With friends, agree on a modest first project and the time you expect to stop. Decide who hosts and what happens to the world when that person is offline. Do not assume that someone else will be able to open the same save independently. Check the hosting arrangement before you invest several sessions in it.
Check the purchase page one last time
Before paying, read the exact product name, supported operating systems, and included editions on the current official page. A bundle description can change over time, and ownership on one platform should not be treated as ownership everywhere. If you already have access, confirm it in the correct account before making another purchase.
The best beginner setup is usually the one with the fewest unresolved questions. You know which edition you need, whose world you will join, and where the official support information lives. That leaves the interesting decision—what to build first—for the game itself.
