The combination matters more than the label
Riot’s console guidance distinguishes console cross-play from PC matchmaking. A PlayStation player and an Xbox player are the console combination to investigate; adding a PC changes the answer. Progression is another question, so the same Riot account does not by itself place every device in the same matchmaking pool.
Ask the group before installing
Have each person name their platform and the account region they use. Then check Riot’s current console access guide for regional availability and the exact supported setup. Someone can be reading a valid guide for another market without having the same access in their own account.
If your group includes both PC and console players, settle on an actually supported shared game or a common available platform. A controller attached to a PC should not be treated as proof that the PC will be moved into the console matchmaking pool.
Check the account before changing connections
When adding a platform, identify the Riot account that already owns your progress and follow the official linking process. Do not create a second account and expect the two histories to merge later. If a connection is already attached elsewhere, use the publisher’s recovery guidance rather than unlinking repeatedly.
A useful question to bring to support
“Which devices are involved, what region are the accounts in, and at what step does it fail?” is more useful than “cross-play is broken.” Record whether the problem is account access, adding a friend or joining a supported session. Our general cross-play guide explains the vocabulary; this game-specific page gives the more restrictive VALORANT case.
